Hinduism
Holi
In EYFS we learnt about the Hindu festival of Holi. The children used ICT to recreate the part of the celebration where they throw paint. We heard the story of Prahlad and learnt that Brahman wants us to be kind to each other. We also learnt the word 'karma' and that Hindus believe that there are consequences to actions, whether they are good or bad.
We also enjoyed throwing paint as they do during the Holi celebrations, but we threw it onto paper not at each other.
LKS2
LKS2 have explored Hinduism through the festival of Diwali. We learned about the story of Rama and Sita and how their return is the focus for Diwali. Diwali translates as "row of lighted lamps" and Hindus around the world light candles in their homes in reference to the lights that guided Rama and Sita back to their kingdom. Diwali also celebrates the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. We applied these themes to our own lives and thought about times where light or darkness was present in our lives and what the right courses of action could be, including how a Hindu would react.
We also looked at the beautiful rangoli patterns that Hindus use to decorate their homes at Diwali. Above are some examples.
UKS2
UKS2 have explored the story of Prahlad and Holika and understand that stories found in Hindu scriptures offer Hindus guidance on how to live their lives. They identified that the message of the story shows the victory of good over evil and those who continue believing and worshiping their Gods will be kept from harm and protected. They learnt why the story is associated with the Holi festival and understand that this is an important time during which everyone, no matter of which ability, gender, religion, sexual orientation, class or race, is treated equally.
